The Devils Tower is located near Hulett, Wyoming, 80 miles from Sturgis, and rises 1, 267 feet into the air. It is either a monolithic igneous intrusion or a volcanic neck. Geologists agree on the former, but are not certain “how” it took place. Local Indian tribes had varying names for it ranging from “Aloft on a Rock”, “Bear’s House” to “Tree Rock.” Devils Tower received its present name in 1875 while Col. Dodge’s interpreter misunderstood the name as Bad God’s Tower. It was later shortened to Devils Tower. It was the first declared US National Monument on September 24, 1906.
